You may remember the Marbles name from the mid-noughties - this card has been re-launched by NewDay, who provide other cards for those with some credit history issues.
The card starts with an easy-to-manage £100-£1200 credit limit - the limit is reviewed after 3 months and you could get an increase on your 4th statement. The benefits of this card are that you can find out if you'll be accepted before applying, thus avoiding any unnecessary credit searches on your credit report. The online account management is also good, allowing you to track your balance, set due date reminders and set spending alerts.

Aquis is aimed at those with just a few issues on their credit history who want to get access to a credit card. If you’ve got a very poor credit history, the Vanquis Visa card is a better bet, but the interest rate is higher on that to reflect the risk. The Aquis card on the other hand is around 10% cheaper. No frills or introductory offers, the main purpose of an Aquis card is to help your rebuild your credit reputation. You could become eligible for a credit limit increase after your 5th statement and further increases every 5 months, up to £4,000, but this is not guaranteed. Don't depend on credit cards for longer term debt, and be aware of the need to keep all other credit commitments up-to-date if you wish to be eligible for limit increases. Payment reminders by SMS is a useful service offered by the Aquis card. Voted the winner in the Credit Today Awards as Credit Card Provider of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012, and also comes out well in our own Banking and Credit Card surveys for customer service - 72% rate its customer service as very good or excellent. On the independent consumer review website Trustpilot, though not everyone is happy, Vanquis gets a 4 star rating which is a rare achievement.

Your account will be reviewed within 12 months and your line of credit may be increased if you always pay on time and stay within your credit limit. 72% of respondents to our annual survey rate Barclaycard customer service as very good or excellent.

Launched in August 2012 by MI Money, this card is administered by Capital One on its behalf. The maximum credit limit is £1,500 and there are a number of special discount-type offers from Luma, which are also available on their website to non-cardholders. The main purpose of the Luma Card is to help those with poor or no credit history to regain a credit card, which can then help rebuild a better credit record. The interest rate is high but reflects the sub-prime target market it is targeting. The high interest rate means that this is not a card to borrow with – unless you have no other option.

Luma's latest credit card allows customers up to 3 months interest free on their purchases, something rarely seen on credit building cards. With credit limits up to £1,500, customers can be accepted if they are new to credit, have some previous bad credit history or CCJs, so the card could be beneficial to someone that is looking for a short term loan to repay in a few month's time, as it'll be on an interest free basis. With the interest rates at 35.94% once the initial 3 months is over this could be an expensive way of borrowing, so we always recommend trying to pay balances back in full each month wherever possible. Additional cardholders can be added and you can manage the account online or with the app.

The main advantage of the Vanquis Card is that it enables those with very poor credit histories to get a credit card. Initial credit limits are low, from £150-£1,000. If you keep your credit record spotless - on this card and all others - you could become eligible for an increase in the credit limit after your 5th statement and further increases every 5 months, up to £4,000, though this is not guaranteed. The interest rate is high, reflecting the fact that Vanquis is a sub-prime lender and is prepared to take on more risk than others. So while the card can be used for credit that should be as a last resort. Think instead of using it to help build your credit history. There are no frills attached. Vanquis has been voted the winner in the Credit Today Awards as Credit Card Provider of the Year in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012. On the independent consumer review website Trustpilot, Vanquis gets a 4 star rating. Check out their comparatively cheaper Aquis card if you only have relatively few issues on your credit history.
